Carlisle, UK - College
Ryder delivered the renewal of the existing accommodation, rationalisation of the campus and the creation of a more civic and improved public realm at Carlisle College. The scheme, which included the demolition of several vacated buildings, provides teaching accommodation, hair and beauty suites, a catering kitchen and training restaurant, student services and a specialist facility to support students with learning difficulties.
The accommodation is provided in a two storey teaching wing and a central double height link block, connecting with existing accommodation to the south. Connections to the north, across Strand Road, are achieved via a high level retained and upgraded link bridge.

Additional funds became available in late 2010 to enhance parts of the wider college estate. These works included the replacement of all openings across the buildings envelope as well as a new roof finish and the refurbishment of several internal spaces.
Throughout the development of the design, there was constant communication between the design team and stakeholders, including valuable input from college governors, senior management team, departmental members and students.
